Special Education

                                                           Very Special Arts!
Adaptations for students with special needs:
1. Modify the position of tables, provide comfy pillows or chairs so that the student can work comfortably and easily
2. Providing art supplies that can be easily handled by children who struggle with motor sensory inabilities. Velcro straps can also be purchased.
3. Place pegs on doors and cabinets for easy access for students
4. Allow sunlight to enter the room. Many students who suffer from autism are sensitive to florescent lights.
5. Implement a Universal Design for Learning in your classroom so that students of all abilities can benefit and succeed.
6. Give every student the same choices

Extensions for students who are "gifted" and "talented":
1. Ensure that all assignments are developed with UDL framework to ensure differentiated instruction
2. Set up multiple centers for students to move about at their own pacing. Provide an optional "challenge" center for students to visit at their leisure
3. Learning logs: for students who have extensive extracurricular work they have done outside of the classroom, allow students to log their work and connect it to the classroom learning targets and objectives
4. Independent study contracts: the student chooses a topic of interest and works out the parameters and expected outcomes with the teacher
5. Ensure that classroom assignments are tiered. Students who master assignments easily can be provided with additional, more advanced reading and assignments to complete
